Honors, achievements and special recognition:

  • Proud mom of an amazing daughter, Amanda Faletra, a first-year music teacher in Fall 2009.
  • Secretary to H. George Fredrickson, Edwin O. Stene Distinguished Professor of Public Administration; secretary for the Public Management Research Association; and assistant to the editor-in-chief of the association's journal
  • I am blessed with amazing friends and family who have seen me through all the rough patches in my life.

An honor, achievement or accomplishment that is most meaningful to me and why:

Being nominated for the Women of Distinction Calendar by a co-worker has been the most meaningful honor I have received. To be recognized by a person I work with closely and acknowledged for my contribution to the OMA and KU humbles me.

Someone who has been a role model for me:

My daughter, Amanda, takes life's rollercoaster in stride and makes the most out of every situation. She has touched so many people's lives from when she started elementary school and on into her career, which starts this fall, as an elementary music teacher. She is kind, understanding, passionate, caring and a strong and amazing young woman. She is everything I would aspire to be if I could have a do-over.

Someone who has been influential or had a significant impact on my life:

Santos Nunez Galicia, former Program Director for the Multicultural Resource Center at the University of Kansas, now the Director of Multicultural Student Affairs and Assistant Dean of Students at Iowa State. She taught me to believe in myself, my convictions, have passion for what I do every day and that everyone can make a difference.

Most favorite college-related memory:

Expressions of appreciation from students that I encounter on a daily basis in the Office of Multicultural Affairs.

An important life lesson I have learned:

Take time each day to make a difference in someone's life, no matter how small the act.

If I had a sister just entering college, I would want her to know...

I would recommend to a sister or daughter to be giving of herself and it will return two-fold.

A favorite quote or saying (and why it is meaningful to me):

"Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle." – Plato

We never know what someone else is going through, so a moment of kindness or a smile that you may give someone may make their day. We all need that smile, thank you, or a kind work sometimes.
