Recognition Awards

The Emily Taylor Center for Women and Gender Equity Recognition Awards were established to honor KU students, staff, faculty, and alumni whose work and leadership align with our mission and vision for a feminist future. Nominees for these awards have worked to advance gender equity and contribute to the enrichment and improvement of the campus and community through their service, teaching, or involvement as mentors and role models. Specific awards and requirements are listed below. Student recipients will receive a monetary award.

To nominate someone for any of the following awards, please attach two letters of support to this form addressing the questions below. One letter should be from the person nominating. Please send in your nominations by March 4, 2020. For questions please contact the Emily Taylor Center for Women and Gender Equity.


BERNADETTE GRAY-LITTLE “EXPANDING THE REACH” AWARD: A staff (unclassified or classified) and a faculty member (professor, instructor, or GTA) who are contributing to campus recruitment and retention efforts through their work to promote gender equity and campus diversity. (one faculty and one staff award given)

OUTSTANDING INTERNATIONAL WOMAN STUDENT: A woman student (undergraduate or graduate) from a country other than the United States who has demonstrated academic achievement and has made a contribution to the campus and/or community through her involvement.

OUTSTANDING NON-TRADITIONAL WOMAN STUDENT: A woman nontraditional student (an undergraduate who is three or more years older than their classmates, commutes 10 or more miles to campus, is married, is a parent of dependent children, and/or is a veteran) who has demonstrated academic achievement and has made a contribution to the campus and/or community through her involvement.

OUTSTANDING WOMAN STUDENT ADVANCING ATHLETICS: A woman student (undergraduate or graduate) who, through her overall excellence as an athlete and team member in KU athletic organizations, has contributed to the advancement of her sport and women’s athletics.

OUTSTANDING WOMAN STUDENT IN LEADERSHIP: A woman student (undergraduate or graduate) who has demonstrated outstanding leadership skills by taking an active role in campus or community organizations, developing a new project or addressing a current need.

GENDER EQUITY IN ACTION AWARD: A student (undergraduate or graduate) who has made significant contributions to gender equity on the KU campus (3.0 GPA strongly preferred)

ETHEL BOHNING SINGLE MOTHER AWARD: A single mother (primary caregiver) who is a full-time undergraduate student and has completed 30 credit hours with a minimum GPA of 3.0.

SALLY MASON OUTSTANDING WOMAN STUDENT IN SCIENCE: A woman undergraduate student in the sciences who has demonstrated academic excellence, involvement in campus activities, and leadership in her academic field with a minimum GPA of 3.0.

KATHLEEN MCCLUSKEY-FAWCETT WOMAN MENTORING WOMEN AWARD: A woman student, staff, or faculty member who has demonstrated outstanding commitment to supporting and mentoring KU women.

MARLESA & HANNALESA RONEY STUDENT SUCCESS MENTOR AWARD: A woman student (undergraduate or graduate) who has contributed to the success of another student.

Letter should include the following: -Describe how your nominee demonstrates excellence related to the awards for which you are recommending them and why they should be considered? -How has the nominee served as a role model and/or mentor to others? -Describe the nominee's specific achievements -Describe the nominee's contributions to KU students, the University, and/or the community
