- Named Director of University Communications at the University Of Kansas in 2006
- 2002-2006 Director of the Office of University Relations at the University Of Kansas
Lynn Bretz earned a Bachelor’s degree in English with honors from the University of Kansas in 1971, a Master’s degree in English from the University of Denver in 1973, and a Master’s degree in Journalism from the University of Kansas in 1979. Bretz is a true blue Jayhawk. She has been a member of the KU family since her undergraduate days in the late 1960s and early 1970s. She has risen through the ranks from a writer/editor position at KU’s University Relations, to Director of University Communications, reporting directly to the Chancellor. She has done all this through hard work, long hours, and tireless commitment to telling the KU story.
Although she has served as the official University of Kansas spokesperson, Bretz does not seek the limelight and is more comfortable behind the scenes, helping senior leaders at KU strategize, plan, and promote the University. However, in a time of crisis, Bretz is the “go to” person. Her calm demeanor, her understanding of the history of the University and its traditions and culture, and her belief in its fundamental value to the state, the nation, and the world helps to put any crisis into a context in which rational minds can find a solution.
Perhaps most importantly, Bretz has served as a respected mentor to KU students, staff, and faculty alike. When you walk across campus with Lynn, you must be ready to have every third person stop her to ask a question or give her a piece of information. She is part of the glue that holds the fabric of our KU community together. Upon Bretz’s passing in 2012 the KU community lost an invaluable member and she will be sorely missed.
