Advisory Board

The Emily Taylor Center staff works in conjunction with the Center's Advisory Board. The Center could not carry out its important mission without the assistance and support of our devoted Advisory Board members. Below is a listing of this year's Advisory Board members. Many of the women that serve on the Board have been honored by the Center either as Hall of Fame members or Women of Distinction. To learn more about those that have been honored simply click on the woman's name.

Rita Homes-Bobo serves as the Executive Vice President of Diversity Equity and Inclusion for KVC Health Systems, Inc. She also volunteers with the Second Chance Program for formerly incarcerated individuals and serves on the KU Dean's School of Business Advisory Board and the Kansas City Crime Commission.

Kelly Sartorius is a historian of gender in higher education, and her work includes Deans of Women and the Feminist Movement: Emily Taylor’s Activism (Palgrave, 2014) who has also had a career in higher education advancement. Her current work revolves around the development of college women’s citizenship skills through the turn of the 20th century feminist work of deans of women and female faculty.
Shannon Portillo, Ph.D.
Advisory Board Secretary 
Associate Professor, KU Public Affairs & Administration
Shannon Portillo, Ph.D. is the Assistant Vice Chancellor of Undergraduate Programs for the KU Edwards Campus and an Associate Professor in the School of Public Affairs & Administration at KU. Her research and teaching focus on social equity and how social identities - including gender, race/ethnicity, age, etc. - shape experiences in public organizations. She is currently working on a project exploring the integration of women into combat forces in the Army. To date she has done work in a broad array of organizations including the military, problem-solving courts, probation, restorative justice programs, administrative hearings, policing, higher education, and city management.

Retired Senior Vice President, Spirit AeroSystems, Inc.

Gloria Farha Flentje is an attorney.  She retired from her position as a Senior Vice President at Spirit AeroSystems, Inc. She spends her time volunteering for law-related activities in the Wichita and Kansas Bar Association and she is actively involved in a number of community organizations including  Music Theatre Wichita, Girl Scouts of the Golden Plains and United Way of the Plains.

Chelsi is active in the community; she serves on the board of the Kansas Land Trust, is a former board member for The Willow Domestic Violence Center in Lawrence, and is a founding member of Kansans Advancing Women.

Kellyann Jones-Jamtgaard, Ph.D.
Career Academies Liaison, PREP-KC
Kellyann currently serves as the Career Academies Liaison for PREP-KC, a nonprofit dedicated to improving college and career preparation for Kansas City's urban students. She is enthusiastic about making science more accessible for students. Kellyann completed her Ph.D. in Microbiology, Immunology, and Molecular Genetics from the University of Kansas Medical Center and has a BS in Biology and Spanish from Duke University. Kellyann serves as a commissioner on the Kansas City Health Commission, a group tasked with improving public health in Kansas City, and co-chairs the Birth Outcomes subcommittee. Kellyann was also a 2017 Christine Mirzayan Science and Technology Policy fellow at the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine where she was assigned to the Committee on Women in Science, Engineering, and Medicine. 
Susana Mariscal, Ph.D.
Senior Research Assistant, KU School of Social Welfare

Dr. E. Susana Mariscal is a senior research assistant at the University of Kansas School of Social Welfare. She is currently the co-PI of a 5-year Children’s Bureau’s Regional Partnership Grant- Kansas Serves Substance Affected Families, assessing the efficacy of the Strengthening Families Program Birth- to-Three. As a Fulbright scholar, her career has focused on the prevention of family violence and the promotion of resilience, particularly among Latinxs. She received her MSW and Ph.D. degrees from KU.
