- Namesake of KU’s Hashinger Residence Hall
- Major benefactress of the University of Kansas
- Funded Battenfeld Scholarship Hall and an auditorium at KU Medical Center
Margaret Stephenson Battenfeld Hashinger, as one can tell from her lengthy name, made numerous contributions to the University of Kansas Department of Housing. Her maiden name, Stephenson, is that of the same family who left money for the building of Stephenson Scholarship Hall. She and her first husband donated money for Battenfeld Scholarship Hall in honor of one of their sons. Hashinger Residence Hall is named in her honor, using the name she acquired from her marriage to Mr. Hashinger after the death of Mr. Battenfeld.
Caryl K. Smith remembers that Ms. Hashinger was “known for her attention to detail and her desire that the students living in “her” halls experience some of the finer things in life…She [even] wanted them to have good social skills and liked for the silver coffee service to be polished and be seen, even if not used every day.” She often visited her halls to check on the upkeep of the halls and the well-being of the residents there. “She was the epitome of a generous and gracious woman and a superb friend of the University of Kansas.”
