Femme Frequencies

Emily Taylor Center for Women & Gender Equity amplifies the creativity of women, femmes, and people of marginalized gender identities while building a feminist community around the joy of sharing music.

Dream of the Stars — Open Mic & Collaborative Mixtape Release

On Wednesday, September 27th, at 6:30 pm, in the Hawks Nest (KU Memorial Union, Level 1), please join the Emily Taylor Center for Women & Gender Equity and KJHK for Dream of the Stars – a Femme Frequencies Open Mic & Collaborative Mixtape Release – inspired by a quote from the 2023-2024 Common Book author Octavia E. Butler's Parable of the Talents. In this sequel to Parable of the Sower, Butler writes of her protagonist Olamina, "She dreamed of the stars."

Open Mic

This event aims to create a space for amplifying the music of women, femmes, and people of marginalized genders. While performance slots are only open to women, femmes, and gender minorities, we welcome and encourage people of all gender identities to attend and join us in building a feminist community around the joy of sharing music.

To sign up in advance for a 10-15 minute set time, please fill out this form. While advanced sign-up is not required and a sign-up sheet will be available on the evening of the event, musicians will perform in the order they sign up, starting with those who used the advanced form.

Giveaways

We will be giving away door prizes throughout the evening – including KJHK merch, LPs, books, and suitcase record players. Each attendee will receive a giveaway ticket upon entry!

Collaborative Mixtape Release

At this event, we will also release our next Femme Frequencies mixtape titled "She Dreamed of the Stars." Inspired by the above quote, this Spotify playlist will feature songs chosen by KU students and the ETC's staff that evoke this theme. Contributors are automatically entered to win a free Love Garden Sounds tote bag filled with prizes! The winner of this giveaway will be announced at Dream of the Stars.
